CIDG: ATENEO DROWNING NOT BEING TREATED AS A MERE ACCIDENT

      Section image

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group said the drowning deaths of Ateneo student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili in Aurora are not being treated as a simple accident. CIDG Director Maj. Gen. Robert Morico II said the incident did not happen directly in front of the resort, but about 300 to 700 meters away. He said the victims were later recovered nearer to the resort after they were swept by the current. Investigators are continuing to gather statements from players, coaches, and other witnesses to determine what happened during the team activity. Authorities are also looking into possible accountability as the probe remains ongoing. Calls for transparency and accountability are growing as the probe continues, with officials emphasizing that a full determination of facts is still underway. The case remains open as investigators work to clarify the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
