MOTHER OF ATENEO PLAYER RENE BATERBONIA SEEKS JUSTICE AFTER SON’S DEATH

Rovelyn Baterbonia, the mother of Ateneo Men’s Basketball Team player Rene Clert Baterbonia, is calling for justice and a full investigation following the death of her son during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.
Rene, 19, died alongside teammate Divine Adili after a drowning incident on June 8. Ateneo de Manila University has expressed deep sorrow over the loss and said it is extending support to the families, teammates, coaches, and members of the university community affected by the tragedy.
In interviews reported by local media, Rovelyn said she was left with many painful questions. She asked why her son, a basketball player, was reportedly made to participate in a water activity, why he was allegedly not rescued in time, and why weights were reportedly attached to his arms and feet while swimming.
Authorities said initial findings suggest the athletes were swept away by strong currents, with police saying no foul play has been seen at this stage. However, the Philippine Sports Commission and other authorities have supported further investigation to establish a complete account of what happened.
For Rovelyn, the grief remains overwhelming. Beyond condolences, she is seeking clear answers, accountability, and measures to ensure that no other family suffers the same loss.
