ROBIN PADILLA CALLS FOR STRONGER SOCIAL MEDIA SAFEGUARDS FOR MINORS

Senator Robin Padilla has called for a review of existing laws and policies involving minors and social media following a deadly shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School in Zamboanga City.
In a statement dated August 18, Padilla raised concerns about the possible effects of violent online content on young people. He said some material circulating on social media depicts severe forms of violence and questioned whether current safeguards are sufficient to protect minors from potentially harmful content.
Padilla urged lawmakers and concerned government agencies to examine existing regulations covering children’s access to social media, online content, and digital platforms.
The shooting at the Zamboanga City school reportedly resulted in two confirmed deaths. The incident has prompted renewed discussion about youth safety, online exposure, and the measures available to reduce risks involving minors.
Padilla said authorities should assess whether current policies remain adequate and determine if additional protections or legislative changes are necessary.
