Malaria: Symptoms, Transmission, and What to Watch For
Malaria is a life-threatening disease transmitted through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes, according to the World Health Organization.
Common symptoms usually appear within 10 to 15 days after infection, including fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. Some cases may also involve abdominal pain, cough, and rapid breathing or heartbeat.
The WHO warned that malaria can become severe if not treated early, potentially leading to serious complications. Health authorities continue to stress the importance of early diagnosis and prompt treatment.
The agency also said it is working toward significantly reducing malaria cases and deaths by 2030, with 14 countries already certified malaria-free as of late 2025.
Experts urge the public to take preventive measures such as using mosquito nets, applying insect repellent, and seeking medical attention if symptoms appear, especially in high-risk areas.
